Can you believe Halloween is just around the corner? It sneaks up on me every year. This year, I am headed to International Quilt Market in Houston (in 10 days!!!) so I want to be sure my kids have their costumes ready before I go so I can just enjoy the festivities when I get home. A Friday Freebie from Rebecca Page

If you’re looking for a really cute and easy homemade Halloween costume, look no further! Today, Rebecca Page is releasing the Peacock Mask and Tutu. And it’s 100% completely free!

My version is sewn (using double sided, heat sensitive interfacing to hold the layers together, and then top stitching for detail and permanence), but you could easily throw this together with a hot glue gun. Continue Reading

Make it Sew!

We’re nerds.

There, I said it. We love Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Dr. Who…well, let’s just say we like lots of geeky, convention-worthy things. My husband and I played AD&D well into our 20s, and I even LARP’ed now and then. And…we both played Magic: the Gathering. Husband calls our eldest “Number One.” Our kids are following right in our footsteps, and we watch Star Trek together often. Eldest and husband watched the entire Star Trek: Voyager series, then The Next Generation, and now they’re watching the Original Series. Good times. Continue Reading

Fly away with me with PAB!

I tested the newly-released Wonderland Wings by Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop. The Wonderland Wings pattern includes three unique wing shapes: butterfly, fairy, and dragon. Testers also used the shapes to make angel and bat wings! This is a very versatile pattern to be used for Halloween or everyday dress up. I finished each pair in about 2 hours from cut to finish. The wings are made with 2 layers of very stiff interfacing to give them a nice shape! I was intimidated at first to sew with two layers of Peltex 71F on my little machine, but the tutorial includes tips and suggestions to make it easier. Continue Reading

Project Run & Play Week 3: Costumes!

Hello and thanks for stopping by!  It is hard to believe that it is already week 3 of Project Run & Play!  This week’s challenge was to create a costume – which is perfect because Halloween is right around the corner.  I’m delighted to share these Zorro and Victoria costumes with you.  Please make sure you click over to Project Run & Play  so you can vote!

Zorro is a favorite around here and we love the TV series – both the Disney one with Guy Williams from the 1950’s and this newer one from the 1990’s with Duncan Regehr.  The costume for this lovely little senorita was modeled after the spunky Victoria in the newer series. Continue Reading

A trip to celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder…

Read about our trip the Family Festival in Walnut Grove, MN, home of Laura Ingalls Wilder for "On the Banks of Plum Creek."

Laura Ingalls Wilder Costumes

Whether you are looking for Halloween inspiration or not, kids of all ages like to play dress up. One of the first chapter books our children read is Little House in the Big Woods. Both of our daughters (now 8 and 7) devoured the entire series. It wasn’t long before one of them requested that I make them Laura costumes to play Little House on the Prairie.

The girls accompanied me to Jo-Ann fabrics and picked their calico prints. We selected bleached muslin for an affordable pinafore. Continue Reading
