Coco Cay Tankini + a Swim Skirt Add-on Tutorial

Today I am delighted to share with you my contribution to the Swimsuit Sewing Challenge 2016!  I was hesitant at first, having never worked with swimsuit fabric, but I studied Eleri’s tips for sewing swimsuits and I’m SO glad I jumped in and gave it a try – I just found my new favorite thing to sew!  Finding swimsuits that fit my daughter and suit her style is difficult – but now we can work together to create comfortable, well-fitting swimsuits that work well for her active lifestyle.  No more trying to pick favorites from the catalogs, guessing at sizes, and hoping everything fits when the package arrives!  Fabric shopping is much more fun, right?

How to Make a Single-Layer Veil with a Beaded Edge

A handmade veil adds such a special touch to momentous occasions such weddings and first communions.  In addition to creating a special memento of the day, making a veil can also be much more cost-effective while allowing the lucky lady to have exactly what she envisioned.

For this project, I created a wrist length veil for a petite bride who wanted to wear it more towards the back of her head, as opposed to on top. We started with a 29″ length of tulle to achieve the right length for her hairstyle and stature.  Before actually making the real veil, I made up a quick veil, minus the comb, with a very visible rolled hem edge so she could see the exact cut of the tulle, for her to try on and play around with.  When working with brides, especially from a distance, this added step can be well worth it.  Tulle is relatively cheap so it is easy to play around with, but making the actual veil is a bit more time consuming. Keep in mind that a bulky wedding up-do can make a veil appear a lot shorter.

Vintage Grace Flutter Dress by Bella Sunshine Designs

Today I’m delighted to share with you the newest pattern from Bella Sunshine Designs – the Vintage Grace Flutter Dress! This darling dress is the perfect summer dress for girls. It features little flutter sleeves, a sweet  scooped back, and a simple bodice front that is perfect for embellishments!

I think my favorite part of this dress is the back of the bodice. It is sweet, simple, and really defines the dress.  The three buttons add to the charm. It is the perfect place to add a pop of color or use special buttons.  For this project, I used vintage buttons from the collection that my grandma gave me.  Vintage buttons have so much character – I love incorporating them into almost every project that I can as my own little signature touch.

Mother + Daughter Summer Caye Shorts from Love Notions

On Friday, Eleri shared the Love Notions’ Summer Caye shorts and split-hem pants she made for her darling toddler.  You can see pictures and her pattern review here.  Today, I’d like to share with you the Summer Caye shorts from Love Notions that I sewed up for me and my mini-me!

I made the longer cuffed version of the shorts for both of us – 9″ inseam for me, 6″ inseam for my daughter. The flat front waistband adds a nice polish while the back elastic makes them super comfy. The particular fabric that I used had the feel of linen and had a nice drape and flow to it. This pattern is perfect for all those fun flowy summer fabrics – lightweight wovens and knits alike.
