The Sew and Tell Project

Genie and I are back with a great new pattern for Made for Mermaids today! The Rowan Raglan is a unisex raglan packed with options:

Rowan Raglan Options

Short, 3/4, or Long Sleeves with optional flutter

Shirt, Banded Tunic, Ruffle Tunic, or Dress Length

Neckband, Lined Hood, or Hemmed Hood

Adorable Animal Ears and Faces to personalize your shirt

Trying to choose from all the options was difficult! The animal ears and svg cut files (for a Cricut or Silhouette) machine were so fun that I’m adding a Silhouette to my Christmas wish list.

I chose to sew up a simple short sleeved shirt length top for my oldest. I upcycled a men’s tshirt for the fabric for the sleeves and the body. I reused the hems  along the bottom of the shirt for the hem on the sleeves and the bottom hem making this an even faster sew than normal. As with many of my son’s clothing, I blended an 8 width with the 10 height for a perfect fit! The neckband was lengthened just smidge after this version to eliminate the slight rippling.

I also decided to try sewing a Rowan Raglan with a woven front. This is one of my favorite ways to personalize shirts for my boys because printed wovens are so much less expensive that printed knits. I used a baseball woven along with red interlock to make a hemmed hooded version in a size 5 for my almost 6 year old. He was so excited when he saw it and couldn’t wait to put it on!

Genie whipped up a lovely banded tunic with a hood for her daughter. I love the colors she used, and her finished product looks just perfect on her now teenager. The wide band on the bottom adds visual interest and makes the length great for jeans or leggings. Genie and I joked during testing that our initial shirts matched! If only we lived close enough to photograph together!
