Sew Americana: Welcome Summer!

Summer is finally here in the Upper Midwest! Here in the area where I live, the highlight of summer is the 4th of July rodeos and huge parade that the next town over throws. My boys love a good parade, and when I saw Katy’s call for an Americana blog tour, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to whip up some matching outfits for my boys! I’m taking advantage of the fact that they love to match for as long as I can. My oldest is almost 9 so I know my days are limited 🙂 Make sure you come back on Friday to see Eleri’s awesome post featuring some outfits for the girls!

Boys under Bridge2

I decided to go with my standard summer shirt, the Maui Muscle Tee from Peekaboo Patterns. My boys love their sleeveless shirts, and they never seem to have enough to wear them as often as they’d like! This year, Amy offered gorgeous panels and fabric with patriotic themes. I ordered the “God Bless America” panels for my boys, and as always, the quality of these did not disappoint. I used red, royal blue, and white cotton lycra from Peekaboo to finish the backs and bands. Many of Amy’s kids panels are now available in larger sizes which I love because my oldest wears a size 10 and I don’t have to color block his shirts! (P.S. Amy ships super fast! You might still be able to sneak an order in by the 4th!)

These shirts are a super quick sew. I think I had these whipped up in about 90 minutes from cutting to hemming! My boys have been begging to wear them since I took these photos, but I stashed them away so they’ll stay clean until the 4th.

Because matching shirts weren’t enough, I also decided to sew shorts for my boys using the Coastal Craze Baggies pattern from Peekaboo. You might recognize these shorts from my Make Laundry, Don’t Do Laundry blog tour post. I made one pair for my 7 year old and loved them so much, I have since made each of my boys a few pairs. They’re a fast and professional looking sew, plus my boys love the pockets!

I love your panels! I have never actually purchased or used a panel. I’m so affraid I will cut it all crooked and mess it up. 😛 Your boys look like they are ready for some fun. Have a great time celebrating!

Using panels is easier than you think! For these, I traced my pattern piece out in full so I didn’t have to fold the panel in half. Then I used a quilting ruler to find the middle of the panel print and line everything up. I was super nervous, but it was easier than I thought!

I’ve never tried panels, but I think I might once my little babe starts wearing tees. So fun and I love how they wanted to wear them long before the holiday is here!

They are adorable. And yea, enjoy it. My 14 yr old isn’t such a fan of mom made, but the 12 year old still does.
