Today, as part of the Back to School Blog Tour hosted by Lulu & Celeste and Sprouting JubeJube Productions, I’m happy to share with you this fun and comfy back to school look – Peekaboo Pattern Shop style!
I used the Grand Slam Tee with 3/4 length sleeves and a bit of extra length in hopes that this shirt will last almost the whole school year. The 3/4 length sleeves will stay out of his way as he creates messy art projects but still provide enough warmth to be worn through the fall and winter months. The fabric is fun polyester spandex blend that is reversible – solid on one side, striped on the other. It is a bit thicker than the fabrics normally used for raglans, but it adds a nice bit of structure and warmth making it perfect for cooler weather. Because of the structure of the fabric and the fact that it is just a 2 way stretch, I finished the neck using a binding method instead of the recommended band. I also added some top-stitching to the sleeve seams to finish off the polished look. I just love how comfy and soft it turned out!
Now, it is worth mentioning, that the last time I made this little guy pants, several months ago, he quite innocently wore holes in them playing baseball… mere hours after I finished up the project. He was SO sad because he loved them and he thought they were extra special because mommy made them. This time around, I took some advice from Alisha – an expert on little boy fashion – and used a medium weight denim paired with a pattern that includes reinforced knee patches. The Rough n’ Tumble Pants are designed for durability AND fashion. In addition to the sturdy knee patches, which add visual interest as well as serve a practical purpose, there are front patch pockets, a faux fly, and back welt pockets. As far as the waistband goes – no buttons or zippers! Just a comfy, easy-on elastic waist.
By far, my favorite part of the process was when I tried this shirt – still unhemmed and the neck unfinished – on little brother just to get an idea of what size he would wear. And little brother LOVED the shirt so much he wouldn’t take it off… even though it practically went to his knees. He fell asleep wearing it that night. I knew I needed to make him his own version as soon as possible. The reversible fabric made it possible for little brother to have a shirt that coordinates with big brother, but doesn’t match exactly. I just LOVE how much this little guy looks up to his big brother who, in turn, watches out for the little guy. Such a gift!

I’m pretty sure I have three yards of that gray in my stash. Is it almost scuba thick? Love your boys’ coordinating outfits.
MadeByEmily | 26th Aug 16
Honestly, I’m not quite sure what scuba is like. 🙂 This fabric is 95% polyester and 5% spandex with a 2 way stretch. It also wrinkles, which surprised me a bit. I just found it a week or two ago at Joann Fabrics. I’m thinking of using the rest of it for a pleated skirt for my little girl so she doesn’t feel left out, because she loved the fabric too!

This definitely looks like and is high end clothing. The material selection is perfect for this outfit. The little models are adorable!! Keep up the good work!!

I’ll have to put both patterns on the list for the little guy. I like that those pants have a reinforced knee.

Love how the shirts coordinate but don’t match exactly. I think I need some of that fabric, looks cozy. The whole outfit is great! Thank you for sewing along with us on this tour!

You are one lucky mom to have 2 boys who love each other! So cool. I’ll bet this pattern would make a great night shirt too, in flannel or some soft fabric. Throw on some boxers and they’re ready for bed!

What great outfits for your boys! Love that brother had to have a shirt too! 🙂

Love the coordinating raglans. My twin girls frequently request coordinating-but-not-matching outfits. 🙂 I have the Rough ‘n Tumble pattern but haven’t tried it yet, think it’s time I give it a try!

That looks so stylish but also comfy and easy for boys to wear. I love the idea that the knees are reinforced.
