Welcome to the Sew and Tell Project! Today I’m excited to tell you about the Fat Quarter Skirt from Thread Riding Hood because it only uses 2 fat quarters AND is the perfect stash buster project! I’m sure I’m not the only one who buys fat quarters just because they are beautiful, even if I have no idea what I’ll do with them. Right?
The Fat Quarter Skirt comes in sizes 2-6 and is a quick and simple project – perfect for quilters wanting to venture into sewing clothing or maybe even for a little girl who wants to help sew her own clothes. My daughter is content with just picking out the fabrics – she insisted on owls this time. And pink. Always pink.
If you aren’t accustomed to sewing with 1/4″ seam allowances, you can make this project even easier by purchasing a 1/4″ presser foot for your sewing machine that is very commonly used by quilters. My machine doesn’t have markings for 1/4″ and my seams ended up being closer to 3/8″, so I lost a tiny bit of length on my skirt. oops!
While this skirt would be perfect for wearing with leggings, I used Thread Riding Hood’s excellent tutorial on how to add shorts and I love the result. Usually we layer summer dresses and skirts with bike shorts, but having sewn-in shorts simplifies things so much and makes this skirt playground tested and approved! I used pink cotton lycra from Peekaboo Fabric Shop for the shorts and they are nice and comfy. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be adding shorts to ALL the skirts that I make for her this summer – so perfect for active girls who want to dress up AND play!

I love that you added the shorts! It’s been so helpful to us here too – this year my girls might be too tall for these skirts and I’m going to be buying bike shorts again, argh! Thanks so much for being part of the tour!
