I’m so happy to be part of Duchess and Hare’s first blog tour. Please see the post schedule below and be sure to visit the other participants! The prizes are 5 Duchess and Hare Patterns and a $25 gift certificate to Threads and Stitches Fabric…may the odds be ever in your favor!
Duchess and Hare are a new-to-me pattern company featuring vintage-inspired patterns with a modern fit. We were given our choice of pattern to sew up from the shop, and I decided to sew a Muttonchop Dress with a short sleeve. It took me a while to figure out the name; the long-sleeved version of this cute top or dress has a fitted bottom with the flared shoulder, giving it the look of a (say it with me now)…Muttonchop!
I had been eyeing this beautiful cotton sateen border print at JoAnn Fabric since it first arrived with other spring prints, and I knew this was the dress to showcase it. I love the sweet, little girl charm this dress has, and the soft fabric makes it really comfy for my seven year old.
I obviously wanted to use the border print along the full skirt, and so I added a bit of length so that the print wasn’t butted right up against the bodice. This pattern is drafted to hit just above the knee. I like that the dress isn’t too fitted, as well; with my added length, we might actually get a few seasons out of this one before she outgrows it!
I found these darling buttons (also at JoAnn’s), and knew that soft pink thread would really complete the look. I wanted to use a few pops of the bright pinks to offset the skirt, and I’m so pleased with the sleeve cuffs and my peek-a-boo collar.
She says Teddy likes it, too.
This is a well-drafted and written pattern. Even with a few more complicated techniques, the instructions do a great job of walking you through it, and I love the final look of the sweetly ruffled collar and gathered sleeve. I already have my eye on more Duchess and Hare patterns, and hope that you enjoy exploring their offerings, as well. Beautiful dress. I still don’t get the name, though!

Thanks!
Look up muttonchop sleeve; it’s a Victorian thing, if I remember correctly. The shape of the fitted lower and puffy upper looks like a muttonchop (or so I’m told…)
